Learning Beyond The Classroom
We are keen to promote good learning wherever possible and have created opportunities for schools and other organisations to expand their whole curriculum at two venues in Dorset.
We not only provide tutors for activity fieldwork days to work with children and their teachers but we also train teachers and fieldwork officers with the skills to create their own centres for environmental education.
The LBC service is available to schools and venues of learning potential anywhere.
Visit the websites we have created and help yourself to the resources and downloads with our compliments.

Malone and Tranter (Children's Environmental Learning and the Use, Design and Management of School grounds: 2003) carried out extensive field work through observation and child and teacher interviews. They report that
'A place for flower boxes, a small vegetable garden, a tree, or a patch of grass can be experienced all year and are important for providing access to nature regardless of the size of the School grounds. No matter where the school is located, its size, site, history, or financial resources, School grounds are rich in potential opportunities to create meaningful learning places.'
Dyment ( quoted in A Review of Research on Outdoor Learning 2004) concludes that
'School ground greening initiatives might positively influence students' academic achievements. Examples from the literature cited by the author suggest that numerous 'subjects' can be formally taught on green School grounds - reading, writing, maths, science, art, environmental education, health, drama and social studies. She also argued that natural environments can provide a venue for developing cognitive skills related to critical thinking, creative inquiry, problem solving and creative development'.
